[Rabbit is probably the one thing they should be able to identify, but they’re mollified by the fact that it takes her a moment to figure it out as well. They haven’t even noticed the tracks, just the scent, and they follow it a few cautious steps forward.]

[She'll let Rowan take the lead, for now - later she'll show them some tricks, but for the moment she just wants to see where they stand.

[They're still not very good at walking quietly through the woods, and they lose the trail twice, but both times manage to find it again after a bit of faffing around.

Not too far away from where they started, though, they come to a point where the number of trails increase, until they look around, confused, not sure which to follow. If they all seemed to be heading in one direction, they'd head that way, but as far as they can tell they seem to be all over the place.]

The burrow must be somewhere, but I don't know how to find it from here.

You're almost in homid. So you cannot do it like in lupus.

[She looks around.] Here. [The track on the ground is fairly visible to someone who knows where to look - many rabbit feet have crossed this patch.] Do you see?

[...Right, that makes sense.

Only they have even less experience hunting in homid than in lupus.]

But which way do we go?

Look around until you find a track that has shape on one end and drags on the other. The drag is where the rabbit came from.

So look for rabbit bums and follow them backwards, got it. [It does kind of make sense though, and they spend a couple minutes more shuffling around, trying to figure it out practically. It takes a couple of false starts, but eventually they pick up the trail again, following it backwards to what they hope will be the burrow.]

[And lo and behold, they do find a burrow! Not what her plan was, but really they're right, it's probably a better starting point.]

And now we find a good spot to wait.

Downwind! [Rowan practically barks. They know this one! Look! They're so good at this!]

...Which way is that?

Can you feel where the wind comes from?

[ralliesprotests]

[Rowan tries to concentrate for a moment, closing their eyes. But they can barely feel the wind in the forest (not that it would help them in any case).]

No.

Lick a finger from all sides and put it into the air.

Where it dries first will be where the wind comes from.

Does that really work? [They've seen it on tv, but they didn't really believe it.

Nonetheless, they give it a go, hesitantly.] How do you know in lupus.

Also, we need to be over there? I think.

Yes.

[...going to give the easiest answer that is possible.] You put your nose in the wind. [You feel it in your fur, you are just aware of it, she wants to say, but she doubts that that would help someone as removed from their wolf as Rowan is.]

[They glance at her, a bit dubious, but they can't exactly try it out right now, so they'll have to wait to try it out.

Picking their way around the main part of the burrow, they lead their way over, trying to find a spot where there's no obvious holes behind them. Eventually they pick somewhere, a little way back so they have the cover of the trees.] How's this?
